Working with Milk Paint

I get a lot of questions about Milk Paint these days.

Do you like it? What’s it like to work with? Does it really smell awful??

Well, here’s my stock answer up until now

{because I had only used it one other time before today and it was on a small cabinet door just to try it}

“It’s not something I would use on every piece but I do think it’s fun for some.”

I am one of those who likes to research all I can before I try something… {slight perfectionist maybe??!}

I started really looking into months before I even carried LaCraie when Marion of Miss Mustard Seed announced she was going to have her own line

I really loved the look of the pieces she did using milk paint and had some pieces in mind that I had on hand.

I looked into retailing but turned out a million others did too. But I did get order a trial kit before the world so I used it!!

I watched the videos here that Miss Mustard seed had put together for everyone!! They were fabulous.

And then I wanted to try others see the difference. I looked into Old Fashion Milk Company and talked with a sweet lady who sent me a sample of Slate and the bonding agent.

Well that led me to someone local.  Julia of Shangri-la-Lane.  She had a fabulous photo tutorial and that made all the difference for me!!

Which also inadvertently led me to a new color Sea Green which you see here!! I love it!!

So working with milk paint, I base coated in the MMS Ironstone and then used the OFMP in Sea Green.  I waxed with our La Cire Light Brown Wax.

This little beauty is headed Vintage Market Days.

I love the way she turned out!!

Although, I am still deciding on changing out original hardware on bottom drawers.

The top ones were lost.  I just don’t know.  What do you think??

So my thoughts now?  I loved it!! I still wouldn’t use it every time probably because I don’t like mixing every time!!

But if that became a routine rather than occasion it probably wouldn’t be too bad.

So, if you haven’t tried it don’t be afraid!! Go try it.  And NO it doesn’t stink to high heavens like I was afraid of!!

Thanks for stopping in… I promise to start showing you more of those sneak peeks from last week!!

I also have a tutorial on decoupaging furniture… It’s another top question in the last few weeks!! Soon!!

Until then, happy painting!! ~ Lori

    I’d like to try it. Do you mix it with water or is there a certain liquid to use?

  2. The dresser is STUNNING. It was interesting to me to hear your thoughts on milk paint too! I haven’t tried it yet because it’s not cheap, but I do want to give it a go eventually!

      Thank you Kelly!! You will have to give it a try. It doesn’t take a lot to go a long ways… I mixed way to much and I have no idea how long it keeps so I wasted a lot!! But it was fun to work with. Have a great day!! ~ Lori

    Can you get the chipped paint look with OFMP like MMS’s (if you don’t use the bonding agent)?
